Growing a Community Rooted in Reflection and Connection

Growing a Community Rooted in Reflection and Connection

Portraits of Self began with a simple question.

Years ago, while sitting on an airplane, I started thinking about how rarely we ask one another the kinds of questions that reveal who we really are. Not what we do for work, where we're from, or what we look like, but the questions that invite honesty, curiosity, and reflection.

That idea became Portraits of Self.

What started as a small personal project has since grown into an ongoing exploration of what it means to be human. Today, Portraits of Self has collected thousands of handwritten reflections from people around the world, creating a living archive of thoughts, memories, fears, hopes, and moments of beauty.

Whether in Copenhagen, New York, or somewhere in between, the answers continue to remind us of the same thing: beneath our different lives, we have far more in common than we often realize.

Why We Created Portraits of Self

We spend much of our lives presenting ourselves to the world.

Portraits of Self invites us to look inward instead.

Through thoughtfully designed prompts, installations, conversations, and shared experiences, we create space for people to pause, reflect, and write honestly. There are no right answers. No performance. Just a moment to consider a question that might otherwise go unasked.

Each individual response becomes part of something larger.

Together, thousands of anonymous answers reveal surprising patterns of shared humanity. They remind us that while our stories are unique, many of our emotions, dreams, and struggles are remarkably similar.

In a time increasingly shaped by algorithms, artificial intelligence, and digital distraction, Portraits of Self is a quiet invitation to reconnect with ourselves and with one another.

More Than an Installation

Although many people first encounter Portraits of Self through our public installations, we see it as something much bigger.

It is a platform for conversation.

A framework for meaningful experiences.

A growing community built around curiosity and human connection.

As the project continues to evolve, we're exploring new ways for Portraits of Self to live beyond the installation itself, from intimate dinners and creative workshops to retreats, cultural events, leadership gatherings, and collaborations with brands and organizations that value thoughtful experiences.

No matter the setting, the intention stays the same: create spaces where people can slow down and leave feeling a little more connected than when they arrived.

Looking Ahead

Portraits of Self is still growing.

Our hope is to bring the project to more cities, collaborate with inspiring partners, and continue collecting voices from around the world. Every new answer adds another piece to a much larger portrait, one created not by a single artist, but by thousands of people willing to share a small part of themselves.

We believe beauty has the power to bring people together.

We believe questions can open doors that small talk never could.

And we believe that, even in a divided world, there is extraordinary value in discovering just how much we share.

Portraits of Self is our invitation to begin that conversation.

Every response shared through Portraits of Self becomes part of a growing living archive of human experience.

Together, these handwritten reflections reveal something remarkable: while every story is different, the emotions, hopes, fears, and moments that shape us are often deeply shared. With every new city, installation, and conversation, that collective portrait continues to grow.

We're excited to see where it leads next.
